Job Description

Summary/objective

The Office of Grants and Sponsored programs serves as the central headquarters for coordinating all grants, research projects and sponsored program activities. The Director partners with faculty, staff, and administrators to identify, apply for, obtain resources in support of teaching, scholarship, research, and the university mission and the strategic plan. The Director ensures that all grants submitted follow grant requirements and comply with University policy and procedures. The Director provides directions, assistance, training and encouragement to faculty and staff interested in research projects and grant writing and is responsible for increasing and sustaining successful grant activities by working with faculty and staff in researching and identifying prospective resource opportunities at the federal, state, local and private funding source levels.

The Director is also responsible for preparing the Annual Title III Activity application, implementing its objectives and submitting all required progress reports. Additionally, the Director supervises the office staff.

  1. Strengthens University research capabilities by assisting faculty, staff and administrators in the preparation and submission of competitive proposals to external sources for of instructional, service and research activities.

  2. Works to increase the number and amount of grant/research awards received annually by encouraging grant writing among faculty and staff.

  3. Supports and expands University research and related strategic initiatives by employing systems to track and produce outcomes to measure overall success.

  4. Enforces, maintains and ensures grant compliances with applicable laws and regulations, contractual terms and other requirements of the externally funded activity. Includes reviewing proposal packages to ensure compliance.

  5. Facilitates effective internal review of proposed submissions, recommends approval of institutional proposals to the administration, submit grant proposals to external funding agencies or organizations on behalf of the university, disseminates award notices and maintain essential records and files relating to grants and sponsored program.;

  6. Disseminates information about funding opportunities to faculty and staff on a regular basis; inform specific faculty and staff about opportunities in their areas of interest/expertise/research.

  7. Identifies potential grant sources from federal, state and local agencies, companies and foundations to support faculty research, training, professional development, as well as departmental, college, school and multi-institutional projects.

  8. Provides regular grant writing workshops and training opportunities each semester.

  9. Maintains and updates the University’s internal faculty research capabilities document.

  10. Must maintain an ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.

  11. Works to increase the university’s access to federal and state electronic

    grant writing management systems and tools.

  12. Keeps the Vice Chancellor for Research, Strategic Initiatives and Title III

    Executive Director informed on the activities of the Office.

  13. Perform all other duties as assigned.

Competencies
 
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with Federal Cost Accounting Standards and Uniform Guidance requirements.
  • Experience working with faculty in a higher education setting.
  • Experience preparing project budgets, including salary calculations.
  • Familiarity with the administrative activities associated with the scientific research process.

  • Demonstrated experience with federal submission portals such as grants.gov, NSF research.gov, or NIH ASSIST.

  • Demonstrate excellent people, oral communication and customer service skills.

  • Have the aptitude to interact with individuals in a professional, diplomatic and courteous manner.

  • Have the proven ability to handle multiple competing priorities and to adapt to changing priorities, situations and demands.

  • Utilize independent judgment, problem solving and decision making in order to respond to constituents and represent the office in an effective and appropriate manner.

  • Demonstrate advanced skills for Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Teams, and Outlook.

Required Education and Experience
  • Master’s degree required.

  • At least five years of relevant experience in the area.

  • Three to five years of higher education experience.

  • Broad experience in grants/research administration.

Preferred Education and Experience
  • Doctorate degree desirable.
  • Training in grant writing preferred.
  • Proven experience security grant funds or a detailed list of funded and unfunded proposals.
