Human Resources | Medical Benefits for Retirees

Retirees of the Southern University System may continue medical coverage upon retirement if they have met the eligibility requirements for age and years of service under TRSL or LASERS. In addition, members of TRSL’s Optional Retirement Plan (ORP) must also meet the eligibility requirements defined by the TRSL to continue coverage.

If you are uncertain of your eligibility or have questions concerning retirement eligibility, please contact the Office of Human Resources at:

If participation in a health plan through the State of Louisiana began on or after January 1, 2002, the state subsidy of the premium after retirement will be based on the number of years participated in a Group Benefits program. Employees with continuous coverage from prior to 2002 through their retirement are grandfathered into the 75% premium category below.

For more information on medical coverage while in retirement, please review the OGB’s (Office of Group Benefits, State of Louisiana) fact sheet that can be found at: Retirement Readiness Fact Sheet
