Time Off Benefit

At Southern University of New Orleans (SUNO), we under the importance of maintaining a healthy workplace balance. So, in addition to the robust holiday schedule, the Southern University System also offers its employees generous a paid time off benefit. Depending upon your classification, certain leave benefits may apply:

Annual Leave

Annual leave is granted with pay to an employee for the purpose of rehabilitation, restoration, and maintenance of work efficient, or the transaction of any personal affair. This schedule applies to all employees except teaching faculty and other nine (9) month contracted employees.

No employee shall be absent from their duties without proper authorization and any unauthorized leave of absence will be dealt with through disciplinary policies. Annual leave must be applied for by the employee and may be used only when approved his or her supervisor. The minimum charge to annual leave records shall not be less than one-half hour except when being used for FMLA purposes.

Sick Leave

Sick leave with pay is granted to an employee who is suffering with a disability as a result of an accident, illness, or childbearing, which prevents the employee from performing his or her usual duties and responsibilities. Sick leave with pay may be granted to an employee requiring medical, dental, or optical consultation of treatment.

ACT NO. 241

Effective June 11, 2020, the Louisiana State Legislature on expanded the use of accrued sick leave by Unclassified (Professional, Academic, Other Academic, and Professional Hourly) employees as follows:

Sick leave may be used to care for an immediate family member who is ill or injured or to accompany an immediate family member to a medical, dental, or optical consultation or treatment. An immediate family member is defined as a spouse, parent, or child of an employee.


The Louisiana Department of State Civil Service adopted changes to Chapters 1 and 11 of the Civil Service Handbook effective May 7, 2020, allowing the expanded use of sick leave by classified employees to care for an immediate family member who is ill or injured or who requires medical, dental or optical treatment when it is not possible to arrange such appointments for non-duty hours.

 

Civil Leave

Civil leave is leave with pay without the loss of annual or sick leave for an employee to perform civil duties (i.e., such as Jury Duty, work in connection with national defense or other civil emergencies, to vote, or if subpoenaed as a witness.)

Emergency Leave

Emergency leave is leave granted by the System President or Chancellor to a group of employees who have been affected by extraordinary conditions, which are defined at the time of the emergency.

Leave of Absence without Pay

A leave of absence without pay is granted to employees for good cause under stipulated conditions. For example, a leave of absence without pay may be granted for an extended illness, to provide care for a family member, adoption of a child, or educational purposes that will directly correlate to the employee’s job and improve job effectiveness.

Maternity Leave

The guidelines for maternity leave are addressed by SUNO’s Sick Leave guidelines and the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA).

Military Leave

Military leave is leave with pay that is granted to an employee who is ordered to duty with troops at field exercises or for instruction with any branch of the Armed Forces, including the National Guard.

Special Leave (Classified Employees)

Special leave is leave with pay without loss of annual leave or sick leave granted under stipulated conditions.

• Employees are allowed time away to take State Civil Service exams or other exams before a state licensing board pertinent to their state employment. Employees will be required to provide documentation of the examinations and SUNO reserves the right to reasonably limit the frequency.

• When SUNO determines that local conditions or celebrations make it impractical for employees to work in that location. This could be limited to a single facility or office within the University.

• A pre-induction physical prior to entering the military of the United States. This time is granted in addition to the 15 days of leave required under Civil Service Rule 11.26.

Special Leave Related to COVID-19 Health Pandemic (Classified Employees)

Effective May 31, 2020, the use of special leave under Civil Service Rule 11.23(d) shall not be granted by the University for any employee absence related to the COVID-19 health pandemic. The System President-Chancellor is granted the authority to reinstate special paid leave under Civil Service Rule 11.23(d) for absences related to COVID-19 in the event the need arises due to a resurgence in the pandemic and an accompanying declaration by the Governor.

The University may grant time off without loss of pay, annual or sick leave to an asymptomatic employee who is directed by the appointing authority to be tested for COVID-19 and/or self-quarantine after being exposed through close contact to an individual with a confirmed positive COVID-19 diagnosis.

Such special paid leave shall not extend beyond 14 calendar days as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Once the employee develops symptoms of illness or is confirmed with a positive COVID-19 diagnosis, he shall immediately be placed in an appropriate leave status, including leave without pay if the employee has exhausted both annual leave and sick leave.

Funeral Leave (Classified Employees)

Probationary and permanent employees may be granted up to two days of paid “funeral leave” per occasion to attend the wake and/or funeral services for the family members listed below. (To attend funeral services for other family members, an employee could request annual leave.)

• Brother or step-brother

• Sister or step-sister

• Spouse

• Mother or Father-in-law

• Grandchild

• Grandparent
