Assistant/Associate Professor of Nursing

Position Overview

Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) invites applications for a full-time, nine-month Assistant/Associate Professor of Nursing. The faculty member will advance SUNO’s mission through excellence in teaching, clinical education, student advising, scholarship, service, recruitment, assessment, and continuous program improvement.

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate nursing courses in classroom, laboratory, simulation, online, and clinical settings; supervise students in clinical practice; support preparation for the Next Generation NCLEX; participate in curriculum development and assessment; and help the School of Nursing meet Louisiana State Board of Nursing requirements and Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accreditation standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Teach a 12-semester-credit-hour undergraduate nursing faculty load each semester across day, evening, weekend, online, hybrid, laboratory, simulation, and clinical assignments, as needed.
• Directly supervise students in clinical settings; evaluate clinical competence; provide timely feedback and remediation; and promote patient safety, confidentiality, and professional standards.
• Develop and continuously improve courses, curricula, instructional materials, simulation activities, clinical evaluation tools, policies, procedures, and program proposals.
• Monitor student progress and readiness for the Next Generation NCLEX and advise and mentor students regarding academic progress, clinical readiness, and professional development.
• Support CCNE accreditation, Louisiana State Board of Nursing compliance, SACSCOC activities, institutional effectiveness, self-studies, site visits, data collection, and continuous improvement.
• Maintain an active scholarly or professional agenda; disseminate outcomes; and develop or assist with grants and sponsored projects.
• Participate in recruitment, retention, student engagement, faculty governance, committee service, professional organizations, community outreach, and University events.
• Maintain 10 hours for office work and 15 hours of University service in addition to the assigned teaching load, consistent with applicable faculty workload requirements.
• Perform other related faculty duties as assigned by authorized University leadership.

Required Qualifications

• Earned doctoral degree from an accredited university in nursing or a related field (D.N.P., Ph.D., Ed.D., Dr.P.H., or equivalent), conferred by the first date of employment.
• Graduate degree in nursing from an accredited institution of higher education.
• Prior collegiate nursing-teaching experience and relevant clinical experience.
• Evidence of, or demonstrated potential for, effective teaching and scholarly activity.
• Qualifications sufficient for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor based on academic credentials, teaching, scholarship, clinical expertise, and professional experience.
• Valid, current, and unencumbered Registered Nurse license, with eligibility to practice and teach clinical nursing in Louisiana as required by law and regulatory standards.
• Ability to satisfy applicable clinical-agency requirements, which may include background and drug screening, health documentation, immunizations, certifications, training, and other onboarding requirements.
• Nursing faculty teaching in a program leading to initial licensure must, before or within the first three years of employment, have preparation in adult teaching and learning principles, including curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation, appropriate to the assignment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with online learning-management systems, simulation, instructional technologies, curriculum development, program assessment, Next Generation NCLEX preparation, and student remediation.
• Knowledge of Louisiana State Board of Nursing requirements, CCNE accreditation, governmental compliance, and other nursing regulatory standards.
• Record of scholarship, professional presentations, grant development, community engagement, or funded projects.
• Experience teaching across classroom, clinical, simulation, hybrid, and online modalities.

• Strong scholarly writing, oral communication, presentation, interpersonal, organizational, technology, and collaborative-team skills.
• Knowledge of nursing accreditation, regulatory standards, curriculum assessment, and continuous program improvement.
• Professionalism, empathy, discretion, patience, and a passion for teaching and mentoring nursing students.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Work is performed in classrooms, faculty offices, simulation and skills laboratories, healthcare facilities, community settings, and other University locations. Clinical assignments require adherence to facility-specific health, safety, immunization, screening, confidentiality, and infection-control requirements. The position requires the ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods; climb stairs; communicate effectively; use computers, simulation equipment, and instructional technology; perform clinical-instruction responsibilities; and lift or carry materials weighing up to 10 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation. Up to 25% travel may be required.
