Job Description 

Summary/objective

The Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) Office of Communications works with the University community to advance the SUNO brand and reputation. Through the Office of Communications, we tell the story of the University positively to bring awareness, recruit students and shine a spotlight on the many achievements of the University, and its students, faculty, staff, and alumni. The Office of Communications handles multiple tasks to connect with local and national media outlets, University departments, colleges, and organizations, and the HBCU audience

The webmaster is responsible for managing the University’s web presence, ensuring that the website is user-friendly and up to date at all times.  The webmaster will also work with the web hosting and other technical persons on expanding and enhancing the university’s presence through the design and implementation of new web-based applications that will positively impact the users’ experience. The webmaster should be highly knowledgeable in server management and online security, content management and have solid coding skills.

*This position is funded 100% by the Title III-B, Strengthening Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) federal grant.  As such, the Office Manager assists the Director with implementing the objectives established in the Title III Program for this federally-funded activity.  This position is grant-funded, and your continued employment is contingent upon the availability and renewal of grant funding that supports this role.

Essential functions

  1. Responsible for collaborating and coordinating with all University stakeholders to include:
    • Working closely with departments, offices, and stakeholders to assess website needs and improve operational efficiency.
    • Coordinating planning, development, operation, and maintenance of web pages to support administration, faculty, staff, and students.
    • Performing monthly routine review processes with respective administrators, departments, and student organizations to ensure accurate information is displayed on the website.
    • Working with the Director of Public Relations and Communications and Multimedia designers to source web content.
    • Attending Southern University System weekly website meetings.
    • Promptly addressing incoming website update requests and coordinate with the respective departments to ensure their needs are met efficiently.
  2. Responsible for website development and content management to include:
    • Designing and developing new web pages to support marketing and promotional activities.
    • Integrating updates, announcements, and postings into the existing website framework daily.
    • Updating website content regularly and consistently, ensuring accuracy and relevance.
    • Enhancing SEO, graphics, and multimedia elements (videos, images, photos) to support website engagement.
    • Creating and updating landing pages, home page banner ads, and other web assets.
    • Monitoring and providing ongoing analysis of the University's webpages to identify broken links and content errors as well as outdated content. 
    • Maintaining and organizing website assets within the CMS, ensuring proper usage and routine management of images, videos, graphics, and informational content.
  3. Ensures the quality assurance and usability of the website by:
    • Implementing quality assurance measures to ensure content consistency and accuracy.
    • Meeting regularly with management to discuss current and future website functionality.
    • Providing recommendations to improve website navigation, usability, and accessibility.
    • Administering quality assurance checks to the SUNO website to identify, diagnose and correct content problems including broken links, spelling errors, formatting, and accessibility concerns.
  4. Maintains the technical maintenance and security of the website by:
    • Ensuring site security by configuring firewalls, login access, and user authentication protocols.
    • Monitoring and analyze website performance, including traffic, user engagement, and conversion rates.
    • Conducting regular site maintenance, repair broken links, address technical issues, and minimize downtime.
  5. Supports and user engagement by:
    • Assisting and support staff who rely on interactive web content.
    • Responding to user comments and inquiries in a timely manner, addressing any concerns or issues.
    • Soliciting feedback from internal and external stakeholders to enhance website efficiency.
    • Tracking online traffic to identify trends in site usage and regularly review web pages to ensure best practice search optimization.
    • Remaining readily available to address urgent website needs and take prompt action in the absence of other team members to ensure seamless operations and continuity.
  6. Responsible for digital media communications and emergency response to include:
    • Assisting with content creation and publishing on social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) to enhance brand awareness and student recruitment.
    • Aligning digital strategies to support enrollment efforts and university communications.
    • Updating the website and digital platforms promptly in the event of campus emergencies, severe weather, or critical alerts to ensure timely and accurate information is available to students, faculty, and staff.
  7. Responsible for reporting and ensuring compliance of the website to include:
    • Ensuring web accessibility in accordance with the Louisiana Board of Regents requirements.
    • Preparing and submitting required reports as requested by management to include the Louisiana Board of Regents, the Southern University System, and Title III.
    • Generating and providing monthly analytics reports on website performance, including form usage, most visited webpages, and overall traffic trends, to support data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement.
    • Providing weekly reports to the Director detailing website changes, updates, and enhancements to ensure transparency and alignment with organizational goals.
  8. All other duties as assigned.

Work environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, etc.

Required education and experience

  • BS/BA in Computer Science, Design or a related field is preferred.
  • Proven experience as a Webmaster or Web Developer.
  • Familiarity with web standards.
  • Experience building web pages with WordPress and other web platforms.
  • Experience with a variety of Content Management Systems such as WordPress, Drupal, Ingenuix, etc.

Preferred education and experience

  • Proficient in HTML/CSS, XML; knowledge of SQL and JavaScript is preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of web usability and information architecture. Strong attention to detail.
