Job Description 

Summary/objective

The Director of Student Leadership and Engagement (SLE) plays a key role in cultivating a vibrant, inclusive, and engaging student life environment that supports retention, personal development, and leadership growth. The Director develops, implements, and evaluates co-curricular programs, student leadership training, and campus-wide engagement activities. The Director also serves as a student advocate by facilitating supportive connections and responding to student concerns that impact their well-being and success.

The Director provides direct supervision for the Coordinator of Greek Life & Student Organizations, the Coordinator of Evening & Student Engagement, and student leaders who serve as engagement assistants and peer leadership ambassadors within the department. The position also provides limited student conduct support through investigative assistance for non–Power-Based Violence and non–Title IX matters, in collaboration with the Office for Compliance and the Dean of Students.

Grant-Funded Position Statement

This position is partially funded by the Title III-B, Strengthening Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) federal grant. As such, the Director of Student Leadership & Engagement assists the Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management & Student Success with implementing the objectives established in the Title III Program for this federally-funded activity. Employment in this role is contingent upon the continued availability of Title III-B funds and may be modified or eliminated if grant funding ends.

Essential functions

  1. Develop, promote, and assess student programming that enhances leadership, professional growth, belonging, and holistic development.
  2. Plan and execute major campus traditions and signature student programs (e.g., Student Leadership Training, Welcome Week, Homecoming/Coronation, Spring Fest, etc.).
  3. Oversee support and compliance guidance for registered student organizations.
  4. Provide mentorship and leadership development for SGA, Royal Court, and student leadership groups.
  5. Supervise and evaluate the Coordinator of Greek Life & Student Organizations and the Coordinator of Evening & Student Engagement.
  6. Supervise student leadership teams and student assistants assigned to support departmental engagement activities and campus programming.
  7. Respond to and support student concerns, connecting students to appropriate campus and community resources.
  8. Conduct investigative tasks for student conduct cases not involving Power-Based Violence or Title IX matters.
  9. Oversee University Center building operations and student recreation programs (Intramurals, Esports, Bowling, Aquatics).
  10. Coordinate campus programming logistics, facility reservations, and event risk management protocols.
  11. Support divisional strategic enrollment and student success priorities.
  12. Serve on relevant committees and task forces.
  13. Performs other duties assigned

  • Advanced computer skills.
  • Experience working with college students in the areas of mentoring, advising, and counseling; The ability and experience to handle complex and sensitive issues.
  • Proven ability to multi-task, meet deadlines and establish/maintain effective working relationships.

Work environment

Work is performed in office, building operations, and recreational programming environments. Extended hours may be required during major student life programming periods.

Physical demands

Must be able to identify and understand the speech of another person; Must be able to speak clearly so others can understand you; May be required to work nights, and/or weekends; May be exposed to short, intermittent, and/or prolonged periods of sitting and/or standing in performance of job duties.

Travel required

Up to 25%.

Required education and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Higher Education, Counseling, or related areas.
  • Four (4) years of experience working with diverse compositions of student populations.
  • Knowledge of student development theory, leadership development, and student engagement practices.

Preferred education and experience

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising professional or student staff and coordinating large-scale university events.
