Job Description 

Summary/objective

Reporting directly to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the Coordinator of Academic Assessment & Learning Technologies provides institution-wide leadership for academic program assessment and continuous improvement, while serving as the primary faculty-facing liaison for Watermark and related assessment systems.  The Coordinator partners with academic units to design and implement sustainable assessment practices, support meaningful use of data, and strengthen evidence-based decision-making aligned with institutional priorities and accreditation standards.

In addition, the Coordinator provides academic technology support for instructional platforms and classroom technologies, including the Learning Management System (LMS), Ellucian Banner academic modules, and other integrated instructional applications and teaching tools. This role supports faculty and students through troubleshooting, training, documentation, and collaboration with Information Technology to enhance teaching, learning, and academic operations.

Grant-Funded Position Statement

This position is funded by the U.S. Department of Education Title III-B, Strengthening Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Program. The Coordinator of Academic Assessment & Learning Technologies is responsible for carrying out objectives approved under the University’s Title III grant, specifically those focused on strengthening academic quality, assessment capacity, faculty effectiveness, and the integration of instructional technologies to improve student learning outcomes and institutional effectiveness. Continued employment in this position is contingent upon the availability of grant funds and satisfactory performance in achieving grant objectives.

Academic Assessment & Institutional Effectiveness

  1. Coordinate and manage the University’s academic assessment cycle, including timelines, documentation standards, reporting protocols, and continuous improvement processes.
  2. Serve as the primary faculty liaison and functional lead for Watermark and related assessment platforms; maintain templates, workflows, outcomes mapping, rubrics, and reporting structures in coordination with system administrators.
  3. Collaborate with faculty and academic leaders to design and refine assessment methods, including signature assignments, rubrics, and direct and indirect measures of student learning.
  4. Ensure alignment between assessment practices, student learning outcomes, curriculum design, instructional goals, and institutional strategic priorities.
  5. Collect, validate, analyze, and interpret assessment data to evaluate student performance, identify trends, and inform program-level and institutional improvement.
  6. Prepare and present comprehensive, actionable assessment reports for academic leadership, faculty, and external stakeholders, including documentation for accreditation, program review, and compliance reporting.
  7. Provide training, consultation, and coaching to faculty and staff on assessment practices, data interpretation, and “closing-the-loop” strategies that strengthen teaching and learning.
  8. Ensure compliance with applicable assessment, data governance, and ethical standards, including FERPA, accessibility requirements, and institutional policies.

Academic Technologies & Faculty Support

  1. Provide direct technical and functional support for academic technologies used in teaching and learning, including the LMS, classroom instructional tools, and approved educational software.
  2. Diagnose and resolve routine faculty and student technology issues; document solutions in the University’s ticketing or service management system.
  3. Escalate complex incidents to Information Technology and/or external vendors with complete documentation, diagnostics, and impact analysis.
  4. Support the evaluation, testing, implementation, and integration of new instructional technologies and classroom tools in collaboration with Information Technology and academic partners.
  5. Develop and maintain training materials, user guides, job aids, and knowledge-base resources; deliver workshops, orientations, and ongoing professional development sessions for faculty and staff.
  6. Support Title III grant implementation activities, including documentation of outcomes, progress reporting, and participation in grant monitoring and evaluation efforts.
  7. All other duties as assigned.

Competencies

  • Demonstrated knowledge of student learning assessment, outcomes-based education, and continuous improvement in higher education.
  • Working knowledge of academic technology ecosystems, including assessment platforms (e.g., Watermark or comparable systems), Learning Management Systems, and instructional applications.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to synthesize quantitative and qualitative data into actionable insights.
  • Ability to translate technical and assessment concepts into clear guidance, documentation, and training for diverse audiences.
  • Strong customer service orientation with demonstrated troubleshooting and problem-solving capability.
  • Proven project management skills and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced academic environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with cultural awareness and sound professional judgment.

Work environment

Office and classroom environments; frequent interaction with faculty, administrators, and students.

 

 

Physical demands

Ability to sit, stand, and walk as needed; climb stairs; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; operate standard office equipment; and lift or carry up to 10 pounds.

Travel required

Up to 25%.

Required education and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in assessment, institutional effectiveness, instructional technology, higher education, education, data analytics, or a closely related field.
  • Five to ten years of progressively responsible experience in academic assessment, educational technology, institutional effectiveness, or a closely related area.

Preferred education and experience

  • Master’s degree in a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience with postsecondary assessment systems and accreditation-related assessment processes.
  • Experience managing assessment or learning technology platforms.
  • Experience supporting faculty development and academic technology initiatives.
