Job Description 

Summary/objective

The Southern University at New Orleans Police Department (SUNOPD) is an internationally accredited law enforcement agency. Our goal is that with the help of the students, parents, faculty, staff, and community, we can create a productive and safe environment for everyone to learn and grow. SUNOPD's philosophy of community policing embodies the importance of cooperation, education, and police-community member partnerships.  SUNOPD is a one-stop-shop location for the students/staff and visitors to receive police services for crime reporting and investigation, emergency aid, assistance, and crisis intervention on campus. T

The Campus Safety Officer (CSO) is a part-time position that complement’s the department’s commissioned police officers and aids in our ability to expand our services across the campus community.  The CSO is responsible for fostering and maintaining a safe learning and working environment for the SUNO campus community.  This environment is attained through proactive patrol of the campus, to include its buildings and grounds, and through positive interactions with the community we serve. 

The CSO is a non-commissioned security officer who maintains high visibility on the University’s campus in order to aid faculty, staff, students, and visitors.  The CSO must display a professional image and pleasant demeanor at all times as they are oftentimes an individual’s first point of contact when immediate assistance is needed. 

When on duty, the CSO will report to the department’s commanding officer at that time.  Additionally, the CSO is considered essential personnel with weekend/holiday availability required.

Essential functions

  1. Creating and maintaining a safe learning and working environment for members of the SUNO campus community.
  2. Provide required services to the SUNO campus community, including: walking or driving escorts, locking and unlocking of campus buildings according to class schedules and events, and providing information and assistance to the community as needed.
  3. Respond to emergency and non-emergency requests for assistance. Initiate and coordinate Police, Fire, and EMS response as needed.
  4. Monitor campus activities and facilities through proactive patrol and observation.
  5. Identify after hours' facilities issues and assist in the coordination of emergency maintenance response.
  6. Prepare required incident reports completely and accurately for all security and safety related activities.
  7. Regularly monitor and use critical infrastructure systems, including: CCTV systems, fire alarm panels, automation systems, alarms, access card systems, and parking enforcement systems.
  8. All other duties as apparent or assigned by supervisor(s).

Work environment

Typical work environment is continually changing. Includes working in both indoor spaces and outdoors for long periods of time in varying weather conditions.

Physical demands

Sitting, standing, or walking for long periods of time; regular computer, phone, and office equipment use; ability to drive a motor vehicle in order to patrol campus grounds and provide escorts; ability to communicate in person and over the phone.

Travel required

On-campus travel required.

Required education and experience

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license with clean driving record.

Preferred education and experience

  • One (1) year of professional experience in public safety, security, or other relevant position.
  • Experience in customer service, community engagement, or volunteer work (including student employment).
