SUNOMA | From the Nile to the Mississippi
E X H I B I T I O N O V E R V I E W
From the Nile to the Mississippi: King Tutankhamun and the Giovanni Amin Collection is a special exhibition at SUNOMA exploring the life and legacy of Tutankhamun, one of the most widely recognized figures of ancient Egypt. Featuring carefully crafted commissioned replicas from the Giovanni Amin Collection, the exhibition introduces visitors to key themes, including the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb, royal family life, and ancient Egyptian burial practices.
As the first exhibition of its kind at an HBCU, it presents ancient Egyptian history through an educational and interdisciplinary approach. A featured section, Ancient Egypt in New Orleans, examines how imagery and symbols inspired by ancient Egypt appear in aspects of New Orleans’ visual and cultural landscape, found in Black Masking Indian suits, Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs, architecture, local flora and fauna, fraternities and sororities, Mardi Gras krewes, festivals, and other expressions of cultural life.
This exhibition invites visitors to explore connections across time and place while engaging with the history of ancient Egypt in a thoughtful and accessible way.
