Southern University Museums

The Southern University System is the only Historically Black University system in the United States.  Located in Louisiana, the Southern University System has five campuses that are beacons of academic excellence and culturally significant institutions.  It boasts a network of three exceptional museums, each dedicated to preserving and celebrating the rich history, art, and culture of African and African American communities.


 

Southern University at New Orleans Museum of Art:

The Southern University at New Orleans Museum of Art (SUNOMA) is an academic museum dedicated to the collection, preservation, and interpretation of African and African Diasporic art and culture. Located on the campus of Southern University at New Orleans, SUNOMA serves as a dynamic space for teaching, research, and community engagement. Through exhibitions, educational programming, and partnerships, the museum supports student learning while fostering cross-cultural dialogue and access to the arts within the university and the broader New Orleans community.

Thursday -  10 am – 8 pm

Friday -  10 am – 4 pm

Second Saturdays of the Month – 10 am – 4 pm

Southern University Museum of Art in Shreveport:

Nestled in the vibrant city of Shreveport, this museum is another gem within the Southern University System.  Its mission is to ensure that the art, artifacts, and other treasured works of Africans, African Americans, and their descendants are accessible to the community in an organized and cherished collection, in a place of historic significance on the campus of Southern University at Shreveport. The museum curates exhibits and interactive displays, providing visitors with an engaging, immersive experience of the African American journey from the past to the present.
