Dean's Welcome

Message from the Dean
Welcome to the Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) School of Nursing. SUNO’s SON is a unique place, and we are proud of that. At SUNO, students are the heartbeat of everything we do.
Nursing is a profession birthed from compassion. Throughout history, in every culture and community, people have stepped forward to care for the sick and vulnerable. Today, nursing has evolved to embrace research, evidence-based practice, and scientific innovation. Yet at its core, nursing remains deeply human—the mother giving birth for the first time, the father anxious with chest pain, the teenager learning to manage Type 1 Diabetes. Each encounter is about more than illness; it is about humanity.
At SUNO SON, we teach our students that they are not only preparing to become registered nurses—they are becoming champions of empathy and resilience. We intentionally cultivate compassion, critical thinking, and adaptability so that our graduates are ready to meet the unexpected needs of every patient.
Equity in education is also central to our mission. Every student learns differently, and we provide wrap-around support to ensure success. From our dedicated pre-nursing advisor who guides students from admission through program entry, to our use of ATI—an advanced learning and tracking platform—we are able to monitor progress, identify challenges, and provide tailored resources to keep students on track for timely graduation.
The mission of the School of Nursing is clear: to lead trauma-informed, equity-driven nursing education that transforms underserved communities through innovative systems, sustainable growth, and intentional leadership.
Whether you are a prospective student, parent, community partner, or stakeholder, know that we are here to serve you—not as a formality, but as a reflection of who we are as a school and as a university.
SUNO Today. SUNO Tomorrow. SUNO Forever.
