Office of Community Service-Learning (CSL) and Community Resources
“Where serving in the community is learning in the community”
and
“We are Your Source for Resources”
Southern University at New Orleans requires that its undergraduate students complete 60 hours of community service-learning as a requirement of graduation. This does not include the school of social work or health information systems majors.
Knights With a Purpose (KWAP) Community Service work must be completed to obtain clearance to participate in graduation ceremonies. Community Service must be completed at an approved non-profit organization or a pre-approved location by the Community Service Coordinator. Students cannot receive pay of any sort for the service performed. Students who have met the work hour requirements of internship/practicum courses - as required by their departments/colleges - will be deemed to have met the University’s community service work hour requirements.
The purpose of KWAP (Knights With a Purpose) is to:
- Increase students’ awareness of societal needs while instilling in them the spirit of giving back to carry on well after their years at SUNO
- Provide engaging teaching and learning strategies that are geared towards their academic disciplines
- Work in conjunction with faculty, staff, and community partners to gain inside and outside learning experiences that will help to build healthy and vibrant communities
- Participate in structured community service-learning activities that will address local and abroad community needs and issues
- Increase students' ability to be creative, work as a team, and develop self-awareness
- Develop communication, leadership, and other pertinent employment skills
- Investigate careers and build personal networks
- Serve and provide goodwill in a meaningful way
- Increase students’ appreciation for cultural diversity
All students will be assisted with service-learning, granted student-initiated placement, and carefully monitored to make sure the service-learning is worthwhile and valuable for both the student, community, and site partners.
Every student can participate in a wide variety of service-learning opportunities and make a difference in their communities by fulfilling a need, all while meeting classroom or degree requirements.
Partnerships and service-learning sites will include:
- Various agencies, organizations, non-profits, shelters, youth and senior centers, churches, parks, and recreational facilities
- Local businesses, state and federal government, schools, colleges and universities, judicial courts, museums, Housing Authority of New Orleans, Chamber of Commerce's, and Urban League
- Hospitals, clinics, urgent care centers, nursing homes
