Emergency Information

General University Information
Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff
As we continue to monitor Tropical Storm Francine, we want to ensure that the entire Southern University at New Orleans community remains informed and prepared for any potential impacts. Your safety and well-being are our top priorities, and we are working closely with local authorities to stay updated on the storm’s path.
Here are a few important reminders to help you stay safe and prepared:
  1. Stay Informed: Please monitor official communications from SUNO, including emails, social media updates, and emergency alerts, as well as updates from local and state authorities. We will keep you informed of any campus closures, changes to class schedules, or other critical information.
  2. Prepare:
    • Review your personal emergency plans and make sure you have essential supplies, including food, water, medications, and flashlights.
    • Secure your living or workspaces by removing outdoor objects that could become hazardous in high winds.
    • If you live on campus, Residence Life will provide specific instructions on how to prepare and stay safe in residence halls.
  3. Campus Services: We are coordinating with campus services to ensure that resources will remain available. In the event of an evacuation or shelter-in-place order, please follow all instructions from SUNO leadership and local authorities.
  4. Travel Safety: If you need to travel home, please avoid flooded areas and high-traffic zones. If road conditions are unsafe, remain where you are until it is safe to travel.
  5. Emergency Contacts: If you encounter an emergency on campus, please contact SUNO Police at 504-286-3355 or use our emergency alert system, Knights Watch. For off-campus emergencies, call 911.
Please see additional information regarding Residential Life and Housing, Meals, Courses, and Storm Support Staff. We are committed to your safety and will continue to provide updates as needed. Please take the necessary precautions and remain vigilant.

Academic Affairs & Course Information

The safety of our students, faculty, and staff is paramount during inclement weather. At the same time, the University has important teaching and service missions to carry out, and must maintain effective operations. With all due consideration to safety, the University’s goal is to maintain normal operations to the greatest extent possible. We make decisions about canceling classes or curbing business operations very carefully, with full consideration of all available information about weather predictions and road conditions. The following guidance applies to all UConn locations, except SUNO.

The Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, in consultation with the Chancellor, is authorized to make the decision to cancel in-person class meetings. Deans/chairs, department heads, directors, and coordinators are not authorized to make closing decisions or cancel classes in their areas of responsibility. In the event that the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs is not available to make the decision, another member of President’s Cabinet will make the decision.

Faculty/Class Instructors

All faculty at all campuses must abide by the University’s decision to remain open. If the University does not cancel classes, faculty are expected to hold classes as scheduled, except in circumstances when a faculty member determines that they are unable to travel safely to campus. In these exceptional cases, the faculty member must notify their dean and department head and must also notify all students in the class. Faculty must not cancel class prior to the University’s decision about whether the University will alter its normal schedule. Faculty may elect to hold classes virtually using online methods.

Faculty should respect the decisions of commuting students who decide not to travel to campus, or to leave class early in order to get home safely, and provide options for them to make up missed work.

Clinical/Student Teaching/Internship Students

Undergraduate and Graduate students scheduled for nursing clinicals, Internships or Student Teaching assignments during inclement weather should consider safety first and act accordingly. If classes at SUNO are cancelled, then clinical/internship seminar classes are also cancelled. If the student is already at the site, he or she will report to the supervisor and notify the supervisor of cancellations at the university. The supervisor is responsible for reassigning patients/clients based on the closure of the university and the student should leave the facility as soon as it is safe.

If class/clinical is not cancelled, but the student feels that he or she cannot get to campus or the site safely, then they must notify their on-site supervisor & their seminar instructor before the start of their clinical/internship and or seminar course. The student must document this notification via email, as the preferred mode of communication. If SUNO cancels clinical/class an alternate assignment will be provided by the clinical/internship/seminar instructor or the supervisor where possible.  The student and clinical/internship/seminar instructor together develop appropriate assignments consistent with learning needs of the student in the context of safety for all.

Missed Academic or Clinical Work as a Result of Inclement Weather

Students, clinical & internship/seminar supervisors/instructors are responsible for any academic or clinical/internship work missed due to inclement weather. It is the individual student’s responsibility to take the initiative in making up any missed work or clinical hours, and it is the faculty’s responsibility to provide students with a reasonable opportunity to make up work missed due to inclement weather.
