Job Description
Summary/objective
Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) requires all undergraduate students to complete 60 hours of community service-learning as a graduation requirement, excluding programs with required internship, clinical, or practicum hours.
The Community Service-Learning Coordinator develops and oversees structured, meaningful community service-learning experiences that enhance students’ academic and career development. This position cultivates partnerships with community organizations, integrates service-learning into academic programs, and supports student participation and reflection through the Knights with a Purpose (KWAP) initiative. The coordinator works closely with academic departments, the Office of Career Services, and the Office of eLearning to ensure that service-learning opportunities align with students’ academic majors and career goals.
Grant-Funded Position Notice
This position is funded through the Title III-B, Strengthening Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) federal grant, which supports service-learning initiatives at Southern University at New Orleans. Employment is contingent upon the continuation of federal funding. The Community Service-Learning Coordinator assists the Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management & Student Success in implementing the objectives and performance measures established for this federally funded activity.

- Administer the Knights with a Purpose (KWAP) community service-learning program.
- Develop and maintain partnerships with local organizations, nonprofits, businesses, and government agencies to provide meaningful service-learning opportunities.
- Collaborate with faculty, academic departments, and the Office of Career Services to identify and promote service-learning activities aligned with academic disciplines and student interests.
- Serve as the primary liaison among students, community partners, and university departments to facilitate high-quality, reciprocal service experiences.
- Advise students in selecting appropriate service placements that complement their academic coursework and professional development.
- Integrate community service-learning opportunities within degree programs to reinforce learning outcomes and civic engagement.
- Manage registration and tracking of student participation through Canvas, ensuring accurate documentation of hours, reflection activities, and course integration.
- Collaborate with the Office of eLearning to design, update, and manage the Canvas service-learning platform.
- Monitor student progress and provide support to ensure students meet service-learning requirements.
- Plan and promote campus-wide community engagement events, service projects, and volunteer initiatives.
- Assist in the preparation of reports, presentations, and documentation related to Title III grant objectives and outcomes.

- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and database management systems.
- Familiarity with Canvas or similar learning management systems preferred.
- Ability to prepare reports, correspondence, and procedural documents with accuracy.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions.
Work environment

- Occasional participation in community service events or activities off-campus.

- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.

Required education and experience
- Master’s degree in higher education administration, student affairs, counseling, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience coordinating community engagement, volunteer programs, or service-learning initiatives.
Preferred education and experience
- Familiarity with student development theory and best practices in experiential learning.
- Prior leadership experience in a higher education environment.
