Museum Studies | Admission Requirements

 


We are excited that you are considering joining the Museum Studies Program at Southern University at New Orleans. Our admissions process is designed to understand your background, academic preparation, and commitment to museum work.


APPLICATION DEADLINES

  • We accept applications all year round.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must submit:

  1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
  2. Minimum GPA of 2.5 (cumulative) or 2.75 in the final 60 hours
  3. Three letters of recommendation addressing academic ability, professionalism, or museum-related experience
  4. Statement of Purpose / Philosophy (500–750 words) describing:
    • your interest in museum studies
    • your academic and professional goals
    • relevant experience
    • why SUNO’s program is the right fit
  1. Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended
  2. Completed online application form
  3. No GRE required

HOW TO APPLY

  1. Submit your online application through the SUNO Graduate School portal.
  2. Upload your statement and letters of recommendation.
  3. Request official transcripts to be sent directly to SUNO.
  4. Monitor your application status through the portal.

TIPS FOR A STRONG APPLICATION

  • Provide specific examples of your interest in museums, cultural heritage, or community arts.
  • If you lack museum experience, highlight transferable skills (research, writing, leadership, design, community engagement).
  • Choose recommenders who know your academic ability or professional strengths.
  • Use the statement of purpose to explain what drives you and how SUNO aligns with your goals.

INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS

International students must also submit:

  • Evaluated transcripts through WES or similar recognized evaluation agency
  • English language proficiency documentation (if required)
  • Financial statements for visa processing
  • Passport identification page
