Dean's Message

Welcome to the College of Education and Human Development at Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO). It is an honor to serve as Dean and to lead a cadre of faculty deeply committed to preparing the next generation of educators, leaders, and change-makers.

My commitment to education is both personal and professional. I believe that education is not only a transformative force for individuals but a cornerstone of strong, thriving communities. At SUNO, we are dedicated to providing students with rigorous academic preparation, supportive mentorship, and the practical skills needed to meet the demands of today’s dynamic educational environments.

One of our core goals is to cultivate strong and sustainable partnerships with school districts across Greater New Orleans. Through collaborative efforts with local educators, administrators, and community organizations, we are working to ensure our programs are responsive, relevant, and impactful. These partnerships also create valuable opportunities for our students to gain field experience and contribute meaningfully to the schools and neighborhoods we serve.

We are also committed to increasing student retention, persistence, and graduation rates. This means creating pathways that support every student—from enrollment to degree completion—through personalized advising, academic resources, and a culture of encouragement. Your success is our priority, and we are continuously refining our strategies to ensure you are equipped to thrive.

Finally, our focus extends beyond graduation. We are intentional about aligning our programs with workforce needs to ensure our graduates are well-prepared for gainful employment and meaningful careers in education and child and human development. Whether entering the classroom, pursuing graduate studies, or leading in community-based roles, our alumni leave SUNO ready to make an immediate impact.

Welcome to Knight Nation!  We look forward to supporting your growth and celebrating your achievements along the way.

 Sincerely,

Dr. Tonya Rose
