Transfer Applicants

 

Any student who graduated from high school or received their GED and went on to attend a regionally accredited two-year or four-year post-secondary educational institution prior to their application to Southern University at New Orleans is considered a transfer student.

 

The following requirements must be met for transfer applicants seeking admission to any undergraduate program:

 

  • Applicants must be in good standing academically and financially with the last institution attended.
  • Applicants must submit their final official transcripts from each college/university attended.
  • Applicants must have a 2.0 Grade Point Average or higher.
  • Applicants must have earned a transferable Associate Degree or have earned a minimum of 24 credit hours.
  • Applicants with less than 24 credit hours must provide their official high school transcript and ACT/SAT scores.
  • Applicants must have taken and passed college-level English and Math coursework.
  • Applicants must have a transfer reference sheet sent directly from each college/university attended.
  • Applicants must provide a copy of their immunization record or submit a request for exemption (required for all admitted students prior to registration).

The maximum number of hours a student can transfer is 93 from 4-year and 64 hours from 2-year regionally accredited institutions. Transfer students with less than 24 semester hours of coursework will be admitted to the University under the requirements of first-time freshmen.  Official evaluation of transfer courses will be provided upon receipt of a completed application and official transcripts.  Students may be required to furnish course descriptions/syllabi of previous work.  Students will be advised in the academic department of their chosen major.

Effective fall 2015, students desiring to transfer from Regionally Accredited colleges and universities to Southern University at New Orleans must satisfy the following criteria for admission:

 

 

Criteria 1

  • Earned a transferrable Associate Degree (AA, AS, LA Transfer Degree) or higher.

 

Criteria 2

  • Earned a minimum of 24 credit hours of college-level coursework; AND
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 on all college-level coursework; AND
  • Have earned credit for college-level math with a grade of C or better; AND
  • Have earned credit for college-level English with a grade of C or better.

 

Criteria 3

  • Earned a minimum of 12 credit hours of college-level coursework from a college/university freshman bridge program; AND
  • Have earned credit for college-level math with a grade of C or better; AND
  • Have earned credit for college-level English with a grade of C or better.

 

Adult Students*

Adults aged 25 or older (as of the end of the calendar year in which admission is sought) who have attended post-secondary institutions must meet the following admission criteria:

 

  • Earned a minimum of 24 credit hours of college-level coursework; AND
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 on all college-level coursework; AND
  • Have earned credit for college-level math with a grade of C or better; OR
  • Have earned credit for college-level English with a grade of C or better; AND
  • Meets the institution’s admissions requirements; AND 
  • Meets minimum placement requirements for standalone Mathematics or English.

 

*ACCUPLACER placement test may be used for placement.

The Board of Regents Master Articulation Matrix for the current year is used to determine transfer credit awarded to students transferring from one public university in Louisiana to another.

 

Test Scores

SUNO requires applicants to submit SAT or ACT or Accuplacer scores for admissions if you do not meet the minimum admission standards for transfer students.

Applicants for whom English is their second language must submit scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) in addition to any other required test scores.
