Center for Academic Retention and Educational Success

The Center for Academic Retention and Educational Success (C.A.R.E.S.) - A Title III Federally Funded Program

Bashful Building

Mission Statement:

CARES, at SUNO, academically prepares students to be successful collegiate peers while increasing the University's student retention and degree completion rates.

Services Provided:

Cares provides the following assistance to students seeking the degree of Bachelor of Arts in English:

  1. A retention counselor located inside of the College of Arts & Sciences who serves as the liaison between the faculty and students.
  2. A freshman advisor who assists with scheduling courses for an English student's first year of college.
  3. A freshmen-to-sophomore transition report that showcases the student persistence rate of freshmen from fall to spring semester.
  4. A newly-designed First-Year Experience (FYE) program that guides students through the transition from high school to college.
  5. A robust student engagement program filled with social activities, tutoring and tutor referral, academic coaching, counselor referrals to the Student Development Center, and referrals to the Office for Student with Disability Services.
  6. An Early Alert System - Mid-term Grade Reporting that alerts Retention Counselors to develop an Academic Action Plan and Academic Coaching each semester. This intervention can lower student attrition rates and reduce the high volume of course withdrawals.
  7. A Freshmen Assembly and College Survival Skills course offered in the first semester in an effort to help students acclimate to college life and academic writing.

Overall, the above services can increase the retention and graduation rates in each cohort and at Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO).
