SUNO Offers New Early Childhood Ancillary Certificate Program
April 11, 2019
Southern University at New Orleans is offering a new Early Childhood Ancillary Certificate Program. Beginning July 1, all lead teachers in publicly funded centers (Type III), will be required to have a current Early Childhood Ancillary Certificate or to be in the process of earning one as a minimum credential.
SUNO Student Wins First Place at NIX Conference

Brian Bibbins won first place for his Mathematics/Science Education research presentation March 28 at the NIX Conference in Atlanta, GA. Brian is a junior with a double major in Mathematics and Elementary Education.

Lady Knights Perform Well at NAIA Indoor Track Championships

The Lady Knights of Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) displayed great running at the 2019 NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships Feb. 28-March 2. The team of 10 women finished in second place with 63 points.
SUNO Receives First Installment of AKA $100,000 Endowment

Dr. Lisa Mims-Devezin, chancellor of Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) picked up the first installment of the AKA-HBCU Endowment Fund. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. (AKA), in partnership with the Educational Advancement Foundation (EAF), pledged a $100,000 endowment last month.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. (AKA), in partnership with the Educational Advancement Foundation (EAF), has pledged an endowment in the amount of $100,000 to Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) as a part of the organization’s AKA-HBCU Endowment Fund. On Thursday, Feb. 28, 2019, SUNO Chancellor Lisa Mims-Devezin will join with 31 other presidents of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) at the Alpha Kappa Alpha International Headquarters in Chicago to accept the first installment of the institution’s award.

Lady Knight Stacey Ann Williams and Knight Twayne Crooks have been named the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Women's and Men's Indoor Track Athletes of the Week for the third week of the season. Both freshmen are from Kingston, Jamaica
SUNO Alum Named New Orleans Police Chief

An alumnus of Southern University at New Orleans, Shaun Ferguson, has been named as the new chief of the New Orleans Police Department.Ferguson received his bachelor's degree in Business Administration from SUNO in 2002. He received his master's degree in Criminal Justice in 2017.
Miss SUNO Receives Crown

Nykia McCray officially became Miss Southern University at New Orleans 2018-2019 during the Coronation on Wednesday, Oct. 24 in the SUNO Gym.  She was escorted by SGA President Warren Thompson. This event was one of many highlights of Homecoming Week, which began Oct. 22.
CARES introduces the Freshman Male Initiative

Southern University at New Orleans’ Center for Academic Retention and Educational Success (CARES) and the Epsilon Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated partnered to kick off its first academic tutoring effort for the Freshmen Male Initiative (FMI). The initiative is one of SUNO’s early alert programs geared to increase the retention of freshman males.
