  • Visit the Career Services Center often
  • Allow Career Services to assist in building your resume
  • Participate in professional development workshops – job readiness and professional etiquette
  • Communicate with mentors, family & friends about occupations relating to your major
  • Take a career assessment
  • Build your profile on Handshake and Big Interview
  • Research your major to gather information regarding all of the opportunities
  • Make a plan, set goals, create a timeline

 

Sophomore Year – Building your Personal Brand

  • Visit the Career Services Center regularly
  • Begin to seek out internships relating to your career interest
  • Schedule mock interviews with industry leaders
  • Research careers relating to your major
  • Upload your resume on Handshake
  • Begin to clarify and confirm your career choices by gaining career-related work experiences
  • Explore occupations through the Career Services Center
  • Expand your network – join organizations, volunteer, speak with businesses you frequent, etc.
  • Update your resume regularly with each new job or organization you join
  • Explore opportunities online through various career job placement organizations

 


Sophomore Year

Junior Year

Junior Year – Developing Your Exit Strategy

  • Prepare for your interviews, internships/externships
  • Revise/Update your resume to reflect your current job history, soft skills, goals/objectives
  • Be able to communicate what type of career you are seeking
  • Be proactive in your planning
  • Schedule mock interviews regularly with a career specialist
  • Attend career fairs frequently
  • Practice, practice, practice your interviewing skills
  • Reflect if working or graduate school will be your next step
  • Purchase professional attire to be worn to career fairs, interviews, professional networking events, etc.
  • Always carry your resume or create a business card with your contact information

 

Senior Year – Your Next Level

  • Update your alumni profile with Southern University Alumni Association
  • Visit the Career Services Center frequently
  • Attend numerous career fairs and professional networking events
  • Research out of state career and internship opportunities
  • Visit the career closet for professional attire needs
  • Use your network to identify opportunities
  • Maintain a professional presence on all of your social media platforms
  • Tailor your resume and cover letter to each position you apply
  • Schedule numerous mock interviews
  • Network with your professors regarding your need for professional reference letters
