Master of Arts in Teaching Special Education Mild/Moderate in Secondary Education (6th-12th)

Program Overview: Meet the growing need for special education teachers in secondary schools with our 100% online Master of Arts in Teaching Special Education Mild/Moderate in Elementary (6th-12th) degree and licensure program. The Master of Arts in Teaching Elementary Education & Special Education Mild Moderate (6th-12th) in the College of Education & Human Development is a Graduate Alternate Certification designed for individuals who have non-education bachelors or master's degrees and are interested in seeking initial teacher certification in Mild/Moderate Special Education at the secondary education level.

Students who enroll in this program can become certified in both Secondary Education and Special Education Mild/Moderate at the secondary level. Coursework is available 100% online with extensive field experience in the community.

Undergraduate students in non-teaching degree fields (ex. Biology, Child Development, Psychology, Math, History, and English)

Admission Requirements:

  1. Passing scores on the Praxis I Core Academic Skills for Educators in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics or a composite ACT score of 22 or a combined Verbal and Math SAT score of 1030.
  2. Passing score on the Praxis II Secondary Education Subject-Specific Content Exam area of concentration.
  3. 3 letters of recommendation: Candidates for admission who are currently working as teachers must have letters of recommendation from an appropriate school official who has direct professional knowledge of the candidate's skills and potential.
  4. Candidates for admission who are not currently working as teachers must have letters of recommendation from a non-relative, who has direct knowledge of the candidate's potential for success as a graduate level student and a working professional. Employers and previous university/college faculty are examples of appropriate sources.
  5. Additional recommendations may be requested to support candidacy if determined necessary by program admission committee.

 

 

 

 

Graduation Requirements

  • Satisfactory completion of all required course work within the timelines and at the grade levels established by Graduate School policies.
  • Submit passing scores for the Praxis II Special Education: Core Knowledge and Mild to Moderate Applications (5543) and the Praxis II Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades 7–12 (5624).
  • Satisfactory completion of the Competency Portfolio during Residency.
