Job Description

Summary/objective

The Division of Academic Affairs at Southern University at New Orleans, a public, historically black university, is committed to empowering and promoting the upward mobility of diverse populations of traditional and nontraditional students through quality academic programs, teaching, research, and service to achieve excellence in higher education using various teaching and learning modalities. Students and faculty are encouraged to help create a thriving academic environment at SUNO.

As such, faculty of the program are expected to be committed to the standards of teaching excellence. This requirement will include the ability teach undergraduate courses which may include evening, weekend and/or hybrid courses; advise students; engage in teaching practices with an acute focus on documenting student learning; serve on faculty committees; attend departmental, faculty and other meetings, attend College convocations.

The nursing faculty position is primarily responsible for teaching in a traditional, face-to-face BSN program. It is desired that the incumbent has specific

education, training and/or competence in nursing specialty areas. Plans, organizes, teaches and provides feedback to promote and direct student learning in keeping with Southern University at New Orleans’ learning centered values and in a manner, that meets the essential competencies of a SUNO educator. Responds to students in a timely manner and communicates with the discipline and department via college-provided tools and resources.

Essential functions

1. Prepares and delivers instruction, setting high and challenging academic standards, to students in assigned modalities (including classroom, clinical, hybrid, etc.).

2. Prepares instructional materials such as lectures, presentations, lab sessions, clinical and cooperative arrangements.

3. Uses various learning assessments to evaluate student mastery of course and program outcomes.

4. Provides feedback on student's progress, in a timely manner, to facilitate academic success,

5. Prepares and submits required documentation including course syllabi, student attendance, final course grades and other information as requested or required by the college.

6. Disseminates current information pertaining to services available to students throughout the college.

7. Maintains professional development/growth according to personal needs and requirements for certification.

8. Participates in appropriate committees and task forces as assigned; may be assigned duties as an academic advisor; faculty advisor to a student club or organization; work in the Academic Success Center; and/or mentoring other faculty.

9. Performs other job-related duties and projects as assigned in support of the College's mission, core values and goals.

Required education and experience

• Must have two (2) calendar years of full-time clinical experience as a registered nurse.

• Master's degree, preferably in Nursing from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.

• Professional licensure required.

• Nursing faculty who teach in a program leading to initial licensure as a nurse shall, prior to or within the first three (3) years of employment, have preparation in teaching and learning principles for adult education, including curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation, appropriate to assignment.

 

Preferred education and experience

Prior teaching in Nursing education and clinical experience strongly preferred.

Doctoral degree in Nursing desirable.

Experience working with online learning management systems to further engage the student learning process is highly desirable.

Ability to comply with state, federal and local laws/regulations relating to programs, governmental compliance, and other regulatory standards such as state Board of Nursing preferred.

Valid, unexpired Registered Nurse licensure.
