Job Description

Summary/objective

The Writing, Accounting, and Mathematics Learning Resource (WAMLR) Labs

provide supplemental academic support to students at Southern University at

New Orleans (SUNO). The Tutor for the Math Lab will tutor in-person and virtually

and is expected to work with students, either one-on-one or in small groups to

help them attain a deeper and more substantial command of the assigned

subject matter. The Tutor will communicate with the Director regarding individual

student progress and needs. The Tutor must have a strong command of the

subject matter and be able to communicate it effectively to students using a

variety of methods and teaching tools.

The tutor weeks 40 weeks out of the fiscal year at 20 hours per week.

*This position is funded 100% by the Title III-B, Strengthening Historically Black

Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) federal grant. As such, the Office Manager

assists the Director with implementing the objectives established in the Title III

Program for this federally-funded activity.

Essential Functions

Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with

1. Offer Math tutoring to students (in-person and virtual).

2. Reports to the Director regarding student visits and challenges.

3. Works with the Director to ensure accuracy in collection of analytics.

4. Maintain current knowledge of math content offered and adapt new

methods as needed for the curriculum.

5. Assist with monitoring day-to-day activities in the lab, including

maintaining a clean lab, compiling data for reports, troubleshooting

computer issues and checking emails.

6. Assist faculty, staff and students with selecting and using the resources

and technology offered in the Math Lab, including assisting with use ofV1 2 07/2024

math course software platforms, Microsoft Word and Excel, the printing

station and calculators. Compile resources, as needed.

7. Maintain accurate and confidential records on tutoring sessions to track

student progress and to collect data for the End of Semester Reports.

8. Handle internal and external inquiries about the Math Lab's procedures,

policies, hours of operation, resources available and tutoring methods.

9. Maintain confidentiality of student records in compliance with the Family

Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

10. Ensure offices and files are adequately secured on a daily basis.

11. All other duties as assigned.

Competencies

Strong interpersonal skills, effective verbal communication, and excellent

customer service.

Proficiency in working independently in a fast-paced work environment.

Exercise independent judgment, problem-solving, and decision-making

skills to represent the department and respond to constituents effectively.

Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Teams,

and Outlook.

Ability to effectively work with intellectually disabled students to explain

materials and complete assignments through coaching in individual and

group settings.

Ability to work with students of diverse backgrounds in group settings.

Maintaining an appropriate learning environment in class and in

coaching sessions.

Maintaining student records.

Communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with

subordinates, coworkers, supervisors, faculty members, the general public,

etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to give and

receive work direction.

Required education and experience

Bachelor's degree.

At least two years of experience teaching or tutoring Math at the post-

secondary level.

Experience teaching or tutoring is required.

Preferred education and experience

1. Previous experience in higher education preferred.V1 3 07/2024

2. Demonstrated experience working with international students and second

language learners and sensitivity to their distinct needs is preferred.
