Coordinator, Nursing Skills Simulation Laboratory

Salary - $70,000 annually

Summary/objective

Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) offers students a Bachelor in Science in Nursing (B.S.N) degree program to prepare a generalist in nursing with leadership skills, basic research abilities, and a holistic health approach to professional nursing with a focus on the community. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree is the foundation for professional nursing practice.

As a professional staff person within the School of Nursing, the Nursing Skills Simulation Lab Coordinator (Lab Coordinator) provides support to all stakeholders of the School, including the Dean, faculty, staff, and students. The Lab Coordinator, ensures the effective and efficient operation of the lab, assesses and provides for meeting programmatic, and student needs, and oversees the operation of high, medium, and low fidelity technology to ensure safe and effective use of the simulation equipment. This individual is expected to maintain the day-to-day operations of the laboratory while providing strong customer service that is professional, accurate, and timely. The Nursing Skills Laboratory Simulation Coordinator reports to the Dean of Nursing.

*This position is funded 100% by the Title III-B, Strengthening Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) federal grant. As such, the Nursing Skills Simulation Laboratory Coordinator assists the Dean of Nursing with implementing the objectives established in the Title III Program for this federally-funded activity.

Essential functions

During the academic year, the Nursing Skills Simulation Laboratory Coordinator is responsible for:

  1. Assists program directors, faculty, and students in the lab setting with integration of simulation into the curriculum.

  2. Supervises and evaluates students’ progress in meeting designated program student learning outcomes (PSLOs) and course student learning outcomes (CSLOs) and reports progress to course faculty and program directors through end of term reports.

  1. Coordinates and schedules use of labs for all functions, including: regular

    classes, special class sections, open lab, advanced clinical skills, and

    clinical skills evaluation.

  2. Collaborates with the Dean of Nursing to establish, review, and research

    policies, standard practices, and procedures related to the skills and

    simulation lab with a focus on continuous quality improvement.

  3. Collaborates with course faculty in planning, designing, organizing, and

    delivering lab and simulation activities to meet the needs and schedule of

    the course.

  4. Collaborates with the nursing faculty to coordinate the complementary

    blending of lab practice, simulation, virtual simulation and the clinical

    experience.

  5. Researches, develops, updates, collaborates, and refines lab and clinical

    scenarios for the nursing programs based on student and faculty needs

    and reflective of current practice standards.

  6. Ensures safety and maintains OSHA standards within the simulation lab; to

    include appropriate disposal of hazardous waste and sharps

  7. Keeps current with safety standards and informs the Dean of Nursing of

    changes in standards.

  8. Monitors inventory and orders necessary supplies for the skills and

    simulation lab, including performing the annual inventory.

  9. Ensures maintenance of simulation manikins and other equipment in the

    skills and simulation lab; initiates repair and maintains appropriate

    warranties.

  10. Provides orientation to instructors regarding the policies, procedures and

    use of the simulation lab.

  11. Collaborates with the nursing faculty to coordinate the complementary

    blending of lab practice, simulation, virtual simulation and the clinical

    experience.

  12. Assists students and faculty in meeting course objectives through the

    utilization of the skills and simulation lab activities.

  13. Oversees utilization of the skills and simulation lab and equipment.

  14. Serves as a resource and support for Health Programs faculty in utilizing

    the simulation lab.

  15. Collaborates with Nursing faculty to provide student remediation in the

    lab setting.

  16. Utilizes and emphasizes instructional methods that promote the

    development of critical thinking, problem solving, decision-making, and

    clinical competency for real life application.

  17. Conducts tours for internal/external stakeholders.

  18. Provides and develops all training for clinical learning lab faculty

    regarding the administration of at the beginning of each term to include lab equipment, changes to curriculum, software, and/or supplies to be used.

21. Orders, prepares, and organizes equipment and supplies to be utilized in the clinical learning lab. During the summer, the Nursing Skills Simulation Laboratory Coordinator is responsible for:

  1. Manages all aspects of the clinical placement process and ensures effective operation of clinical practicums by organizing, supervising, and evaluating clinical sites, preceptors & students. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  2. Ensuring effective operation of clinical practicums by organizing, supervising & evaluating clinical sites, preceptors & students.

  3. Monitoring student placements and clinical records.

  4. Maintaining and obtaining contracts, mandatory legal documentation

    (license verification, liability insurance, qualifications of preceptors and

    preceptor orientation etc.).

  5. Securing and coordinating clinical placement for all assigned programs

    for incoming and continuing students.

  6. Meet all clinical and other scheduled responsibilities such as office hours

    and meetings at the designated time.

  7. Creates and manages assigned databases to ensure complete and

    accurate information. Compiles reports and communicates data to

    appropriate stakeholders. Databases may include:

  8. Tracking of clinical placements

  9. Contracts/Agreements

  10. Documentation

  11. Legal verification (for students, preceptors, and clinical sites)

  12. Other duties as assigned.
