SUNO Selected as Host Site for the Big Easy ProAm League

Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) Athletic Director James Matthews recently announced the school’s athletic department has teamed up with the Big Easy League, a pro-am basketball league, to bring games to SUNO from June 25 to July 30, 2023. The games will be held weekly inside SUNO’s gym, known as the Castle. General admission is $15 per day, and courtside seats are $25 per day.

“I want to thank Mal Mundy and Greg Monroe for choosing SUNO to host the Big Easy League,” said Matthews. “This is the first event of its kind in New Orleans, and we are grateful that the owners see the value in hosting the league at SUNO.”

The league, sponsored by owner Mal Mundy, along with Greg Monroe (former NBA player also playing in the league), features eight teams comprised of players from around the country. The league touts former NBA players Langston Galloway and Bo McCalebb, along with student-athletes from SUNO, Tulane, Louisiana State University (LSU), Xavier (La.), Howard University, Central Missouri, Western Kentucky, and Mississippi State University (MSU) to name a few.

“We’re excited to be hosting the Big Easy League at Southern University at New Orleans,” said league owner Mal Mundy. “A league like this has never been done before [in New Orleans] so it was a must to do it at an HBCU.”

SUNO is prime real estate for the league, as the school recently relaunched its athletics program after a two-year hiatus.

“This is a huge step for SUNO athletics as we continue growing our programs,” said Matthews. “When I first started as athletic director, I knew we had the opportunity to do some great things on our campus. It was critical for me to build long-lasting relationships with other leaders and organizations and bring the community to SUNO.

“We want New Orleans to experience all we are doing as a member of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference, the only HBCU conference in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA),” Matthews continued. “As we grow, partnerships like the one with the Big Easy League will give more people the opportunity to experience SUNO culture, HBCU culture, and one of New Orleans’ gems - SUNO athletics.”
