Academic Coach/Instructor

The Academic Coach/Instructor advise SSS participants so they may matriculate and graduate from SUNO within 6 years, recruit SUNO students to SSS, collect data and input in Blumen, and input data for US Dept. ED APR in Blumen. Provide individual and group coaching sessions, which will address issues i.e. personal barriers, goal setting, academic mindset, anxiety concerns, avoiding procrastination, career coaching, address various academic and social issues, assist with scholarship opportunities, graduate school admission and other duties of the department.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the entire SSS team on student recruitment, to ensure that the SSS program serves 300 students annually.

• Develop an Individual Academic Plan (IAP) with each new participant, including a checklist of recommended services and a timeline for graduation.

• Monitor early alerts from pre-mid-term evaluation for caseload (100 participants), as well as SSS participant attendance for Supplemental Instruction, tutoring, workshops, and meetings, intervening as necessary and providing positive reinforcement when possible.

• Assist students in communicating effectively with faculty, encouraging them to self advocate and contact faculty directly as needed.

• Act as referral source for tutoring and personal counseling needs.

• Assist participants with course selection with faculty advisors and registration each semester.

• Ensure that all students meet with you and is served at least four times per semester.

• Document all contacts and services electronically (Blumen) and in student files, maintaining confidentiality of student data.

• Meet weekly with other SSS staff to discuss achievements and concerns of the program and individual students, and implement program modifications for improvement, if necessary.

• Report weekly to Assistant Director of Student Support Services and Director as needed.

• Facilitate workshops for students focused on academic skill-building, leadership, career, etc.

• Assist with planning and implementation of visits to universities for graduate school admission.

• Contribute to formal reports of program outcomes.

• Collaborate with college administrators, faculty, and staff to promote retention, graduation, and admission to graduate school.

• Engage with SSS staff members to provide formative assessment and improvement of program.

• Any and all other duties as assigned by Assistant Director and/or Director.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in counseling, education, social work, sociology, psychology or other related fields is required.

• Training in Fields Related to Objectives: Training in academic advising, academic coaching, teaching, student assessments/surveys, and financial literacy.

• Training in various academic and technological workshops/seminars with local, state, or regional entities related to good academic standards, retention and graduation.

• Work Experience in Fields Related to Objectives: Minimum of 3 years experience in academic advising, supervision of students, academic coaching, academic instruction, career guidance, or personal counseling at a higher education setting, knowledgeable of federal & state financial aid/scholarship programs, and excellent verbal and written communication skills, and strong understanding of confidentiality.

• Experience in working with TRIO programs/similar programs serving socio-economically disadvantaged students, specifically first generation, low-income, disabled, and/or underrepresented students is highly preferred.

• Ability to motivate participants on utilizing all services of the program, regularly.

• Teaching experience at the college level, preferred.

• Experience in preparing students for graduate/professional school admission and financial aid information.

• Experience in reporting, planning, and/or overseeing various social/cultural/educational enrichment activities.

• Experience in developing & implementing individual program plans for mentally and/or physically disabled students is preferred.

• Experience in presenting workshops on various career options; and group and individual coaching with students.
