Spring 2022 Chief Student Marshal - Tiffany Colquhoun

Spring 2022 Chief Student Marshal Continues to Serve as Role Model

Tiffany Colquhoun, a native of Jamaica, and resident of New Orleans, and a Mille M. Charles School of Social Work graduate, is the chief student marshal for Southern University at New Orleans’ graduating class of 2022, which includes summer 2021, fall 2021, and spring 2022.

“I am honored and inspired to be serving as chief student marshal,” said Colquhoun. “This opportunity has given me additional determination to be a positive role model for students who have ever felt inferior because of their background.”

Colquhoun has always had an interest in social work since 9th grade due to the constant need for advocacy regarding issues both individually and globally as the country is plagued with inequality and inequity. With various scholarship opportunities, SUNO and the School of Social Work was her first choice.

“The three themes of the Millie M. Charles School of Social Work are advocacy, empowerment, and transformation said, Colquhoun.” “The themes are what I anticipate to implement as I aid in helping those who feel as if they are helpless at times.”

While at SUNO, Colquhoun participated in Upward Bound Math and Science program and remained on the Dean’s list throughout her matriculation. Colquhoun would like to attend graduate school and obtain her Master’s in Social Work.

Colquhoun’s most memorable experience while at SUNO was adapting to the drastic shift of the campus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The pandemic affected both students, faculty, and staff. Through its quick adjustment to virtual learning, I have witnessed the campus,” said Colquhoun. “This resulted in a decrease in the campus participation, which would often be a stress reliever for many students on campus. Excitingly, I am witnessing the University overcome this hurdle and succeed with the return of the Athletics program.”

Serving as the chief student marshal has given Colquhoun additional determination to be a positive role model for students who have felt inferior because of their background. She constantly repeats her favorite motivational quote: “Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery; none but ourselves can free our minds.”

Spring 2022 Commencement will be held at the UNO Lakefront Arena on Saturday, May 7th at 4:00 p.m. Commencement will be livestreamed at www.suno.edu
