SUNO to Break Ground on Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences Building

NEW ORLEANS, LA – June 14, 2017 – Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) will break ground on the new Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences Building during a ceremony Friday, June 16, 2017 at 9 a.m. on the Park Campus, adjacent to the SUNO Gymnasium at 6400 Press Drive.

Several federal, state and local officials and dignitaries have been invited to attend the event, which will mark the start of construction for the $21.2 million, three-story facility, which will have an office and lab wing, with an auditorium and proscenium tower extending to nearly five stories. The general contractor is the Roy Anderson Corporation. The 70,640-foot building, designed by Chasm + Fusion Architects, is expected to be complete by October 2018.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has allocated $82 million to cover the construction costs for the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences Building and three others: The Millie M. Charles School of Social Work Building (under construction), Natural Sciences Building (under construction) and an Education Building (construction expected to start later this year)

“This is an exciting time for Southern University at New Orleans,” Chancellor Lisa Mims-Devezin said. “With this groundbreaking, we will have three buildings under construction on the campus. This new building will house such programs as English, Fine Arts, History, African-American Studies and Spanish. We are grateful for FEMA, and our state and local officials for making all this possible. Not only will our students continue to receive a quality higher education, but they also will soon have state-of-the-art buildings in which to learn.”
