The Department of Teacher Education prepares students to pass Praxis assessments by offering a wide range of learning supports to help their content knowledge and build their confidence to take high-stake tests.
About the Program
This program is about molding quality and reflective educators. We understand the career impact of being a certified teacher, one who has proven that he/she has the content knowledge required to impact the lives of children. Though content competency alone does not make a great teacher, it is the starting point mandated by the Louisiana Department of Education. We help students prepare for Praxis by offering workshops, Teacher Preparation courses, access to a robust Praxis aligned courseware, one-on-one tutoring, and Praxis simulations. All the study resources are Praxis aligned. Students' progress toward passing all parts of Praxis by the end of their sophomore year is monitored and supported by the Teacher Candidacy Coordinator. Monitoring and support are also extended to the Certification-Only pipeline candidates.
Aspiring teacher candidates are to meet with the Teacher Candidacy Coordinator, Dr. Tanisca M. Wilson, during the first two weeks of any given semester to discuss the best approach to help them to pass Praxis. After the initial discussion, students commit to completing their study plan, which is in addition to curriculum courses. After completing the study plan, students are expected to schedule and pass applicable Praxis tests. Aspiring teacher candidates are most likely to pass Praxis if they have the following traits:
• Commitment to studying and learning
• Fortitude to press on through adversity
• Ownership of learning
• Ability to handle multiple priorities
• Positive orientation toward teaching and learning
