Safety Escort Services

Safe Walk Program

The SUNO Police Department provides escort services to those who wish to be escorted from any location on the campus to their vehicles or to their residence on campus. If you wish to be provided an escort, contact the SUNOPD at (504) 286-5290 and give your location. A police officer will come to your location and escort you to your vehicle or other location on campus.

Safety escorts are provided to or from any location on or near campus 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

The Safe Walk program is not intended to be an alternative to shuttle or taxi services. Repeated abuse of the service may result in loss of the ability to use the service and may be reported to the student conduct office.

OTHER SAFETY TIPS TO CONSIDER

Help prevent crime on campus. Please take the time to read below for your personal safety. Further, if you become aware of any criminal or illegal activity taking place at SUNO, please notify the SUNOPD at 504-286-5290. Other points to consider:

  • Practice “situational awareness.” In other words, be aware of your surroundings, trust your instincts, and be cognizant of your vulnerabilities.
  • Walk on well-lit routes. Refrain from taking shortcuts: Always walk where there is plenty of light and traffic.
  • If possible avoid walking alone after dark or in high-crime areas around the city. If you do find yourself alone on campus at night and need to move about the campus.
  • Lock your doors and windows day and night. Do not lend your keys, university access cards, or passwords to anybody. Do not prop open locked doors.
  • Do not leave your backpack or personal belongings unattended. Always secure valuable items such as laptops, cellular phones, tablets, and cameras when not in use.
  • Inform your roommate or someone you trust if you are going out and when you may be returning. Better yet, walk with a friend or a group.
  • Keep the SUNOPD emergency phone number (504-286-3355) in your cellular phone.
  • Sign up for emergency alerts at https://www.suno.edu/form/emergency-management-contact-information-form
  • Call Safe Walk at 504-286-5290 if you need to be accompanied by an officer while walking through the campus area.
  • Personal information such as social security number, date of birth, mother’s maiden name, credit card numbers, and bank PIN code should be kept in a secure place. Never give your personal information in response to an unsolicited phone call or email.
  • Use caution when posting personal information on Facebook and other social media sites. Go to www.idtheftcenter.org for information.
  • Do not accept drinks (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) from strangers. Alcohol is the #1 Date-Rape “Drug”!
  • If you see anything suspicious or unusual, notify Campus Police immediately. Do not physically engage suspect (s) in criminal or unusual activity. Keep at a safe distance, note the suspect’s description, and seek assistance as soon as possible.
  • If you are a person with a disability and have been a victim of a crime, let campus police know so they can best assist you.
