|Browsers

A browser is a software program that sends a request for information to another computer, usually a web server.  The browser interprets the information it receives, then displays it in a way the viewer can understand.
Some internet service providers, such as America Online (AOL) or CompuServe, provide their users with 'Customized' versions of a browser.  Because of the way that these browsers use JavaScript, they are not compatible with some of our online courses.  We recommend:

| Internet Explorer (IE) version 5.0 or higher

NOTE:  There is a bug in Internet Explorer 5.5 (SP1) which affects file downloads.  If you are using IE 5.5, please see  the announcement on Microsoft's Support web site.

| Netscape version 4.75 or higher

NOTE:  Netscape 6 has several issues which affects the way it loads Blackboard.  It is possible, however, to have more than one version of Netscape on your computer.  If you experience problems running version 6.0 try using 4.75.

Make certain that, whichever browser you choose, it is Java and JavaScript enabled. This usually requires checking a box or choosing this capacity in an options box under the tools or properties menu.

| What if you're an AOL user?

You can still access the courses, but often not with AOL's browser.  Follow the steps below:

  1. Download and install the full-featured Internet Explorer browser or Netscape Navigator.
  2. Connect to the internet as you normally do with AOL, but do NOT click "go to the web."
  3. Minimize (shrink -do not close) the window
  4. Start the full-featured Internet Explorer browser or Netscape Communicator browser :  Go to the "Start" menu of your computer, select "Programs", then select "Internet Explorer" or "Netscape Navigator".  This will open up a separate browser, external to the AOL program.
  5. Type in the online course URL to access your course using "Internet Explorer" or "Netscape Navigator".

Since you will not be using AOL's browser, you will need to go back to AOL every 30 minutes or so and do something to "remind" AOL that you are there. This can be something as minor as checking your email. If you do not do this, AOL will sign you off after 45 minutes.
