THE SUNO TRADITION
SUNO is an accredited four-year university that awards associate's,
bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Seventy-five percent of our faculty have
terminal degrees.
The university includes the Department of General Studies, School of
Social Work, and the Colleges of Arts and Social Sciences, Business,
Education, and Science.
Our graduate program awards master’s degrees in social work,
criminal justice, education, computer science and museum studies.
SUNO is an open admissions university. We accept quality students
who have earned their high school diploma or G.E.D. and taken the ACT.
Prospective students are also required to complete a university
application, pay a $5 application fee and submit an immunization record.
Males must be registered with the Selective Service.
A HISTORY OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
Established in 1959, SUNO is one of five universities that make up the
Southern University System — the only historically black university
system in America. Though it actively recruits and admits qualified
students without regard to race, color, origin, religion, age, sex, or
physical handicap, SUNO historically educates African-Americans.
Some of SUNO’s distinguished graduates include a juvenile court
judge, state representatives, doctors, clergy, attorneys, educators,
executives, civil rights activists, business owners and
professionals, ranking law enforcement officials, artists,
and university administrators.
SUNO RISING!
SUNO gained international attention in 2005 when
Hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated New Orleans
and flooded the university's campus. It wasn’t the
destruction of the campus that brought worldwide
attention to SUNO, however. The university was
resolved, the students were determined and the
alumni were dedicated to continuing their tradition of
academic excellence, even in the wake of the disaster.
Within six months of the hurricanes, SUNO – with
the help of the university system, the state and federal
agencies – established a temporary campus of multiple
classroom trailers, a library, an infirmary, a dining hall,
a computer lab and housing facilities. This post-disaster
process is said to be an exemplary model of efficiency
being studied by officials from Japan, Italy and Australia.
No matter where you are in the world, you
have access to the rich tradition of academic
excellence at SUNO. |
