Track Team Wins 4 National Championships
Several Lady Knights won titles, which contributed to the Women’s Team placing third in the overall competition. Shadae Hylton, a junior, won the Women’s 400m Championship with a time of 54.41. Argyana Bolton, a freshman, won the Women’s 200m Championship with a time of 23.16. SUNO women blew away the field in the 4x400 Relay Championship. The team of Hylton, Bolton, Kimora Smikle and Orenthia Bennett (team captain) won the relay with a time of 3:37.57, the fastest time recorded in years.
The following Lady Knights also were named All-Americans: Bolton, 200m; Hylton, 400m; Smikle and Shantae Green, 400m hurdles; Green, Bennett, Bolton and Hylton, 4x400m Relay.
The Men’s Track Team also brought home a championship. The relay team of Danielle Richards, Acdane Campbell, Alex Saunders and Jahnoy Thompson won the 4x400m Relay with a time of 3:11.80. This is the first time the team has won this event since the 1997-98 season.
The Knights named All-Americans are: Jahnoy Thompson, 200m and 400m; and Danielle Richards, Acdane Campbell, Alex Saunders and Jahnoy Thompson, 4x400m Relay.
The SUNO Track Team also had a great indoor season. In March, Jahnoy Thompson won first place in the 200 meters and 400 meters, and was named the Most Valuable Player during the NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships in Johnson City, TN. The Knights also placed third overall, competing with just four athletes. In the team events, the Lady Knights won top honors in the Women’s 4x400m Relay. In addition, the team had 11 All-Americans.
Last week, Head Track Coach Yhann Plummer was named Coach of the Year and Thompson was named Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Finally, during the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Championships, the team won 18 championships and eight conference records.
“Our Track Team has had a tremendous year,” Coach Plummer said. “We want to give special thanks to Chancellor Lisa Mims-Devezin and her family for coming out to support the team in Gulf Shores. We also want to thank the SUNO administration, faculty and staff for their support throughout the season. With the support of the SUNO family, we will continue to excel and perform amongst the best. I see a national championship in the near future.”
