N.O. City Council Honors SUNO Track Team
The New Orleans City Council recognized the Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) Track Team in City Hall Thursday, May 4, 2017 for its success at the 2017 Indoor Track & Field National Championships in Johnson City, TN in March. The Team also performed well at the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship in New Orleans last month.
Over the past five years, the SUNO Track Team has remained among the most competitive in the nation. During that time, the program developed a number of NAIA All-Americans and national champions. Both the Men’s and Women’s teams have set and broken Gulf Coast Athletic Conference records.
The team won every event on the track that it took part in — from the 100 meters to the 4x800 meters relays for both men and women – during the recent GCAC Championships. SUNO competed with nine men and eight women, going up against teams with 40-60 members. Despite that disadvantage, both SUNO teams finished third overall.
The team won the 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500 meters, 400 meter hurdles, 4x100 meter relays, 4x400 meter relay, 4x800 meter relay and the 400 meter hurdles for both men and women. The wins earned SUNO the most golds by any school. This year’s Track Team also broke multiple records that were previously held by past and present SUNO athletes. In addition, the Track Team earned 23 All-Conference honors (finishing in the Top 3 in an event) for men and 19 All-Conference honors for women. That was more than any other school that competed.
The City Council members not only congratulated the student athletes and the coaches for the team’s athletic achievements, but also for their academic achievements. The team has maintained a record of academic excellence in the classroom. The track athletes have had the highest grade point average among student athletes in nearly each of the past five years. In 2015, Bruce McLean graduated with the highest average in his class. The team continues to maintain an average 3.5 GPA.
The SUNO Track Team coaches are Yhann Plummer, head coach; and Younne Reid, Women’s Track Coach. Dr. Vincent Johnson serves as the academic advisor.
