Job Description
Summary/objective
The Division of Academic Affairs at Southern University at New Orleans, a public, historically black university, is committed to empowering and promoting the upward mobility of diverse populations of traditional and nontraditional students through quality academic programs, teaching, research, and service to achieve excellence in higher education using various teaching and learning modalities. Students and faculty are encouraged to help create a thriving academic environment at SUNO.
The Dean of the School of Nursing serves as the School's chief administrative and executive officer and reports directly to the Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs. The Dean will oversee academic programs and maintain external accreditations; provide academic and administrative planning; interpret, administer, and support collective bargaining agreements; implement college and university policies; recruit, develop, and evaluate faculty and staff; and maintain positive student relations. Additionally, the Dean will provide innovative, equity-minded, and creative leadership to fulfill the school's vision.
By University By-laws, Administrators shall not earn tenure except in their capacity as faculty members.
Essential Functions

1. Directs, leads, and supervises all academic aspects of the campus.
2. Creates and is accountable for the strategic direction and vision for delivering quality, responsive curriculum and programs.
3. Develops, maintains, and monitors fiscal resources and secures funding for educational initiatives. • Provides leadership to ensure that fiscal, physical, and learning resources are sustainable and sufficient to ensure student learning and program outcomes.
• Provides leadership to ensure that fiscal, physical, technological, and learning resources are sufficient to meet the needs of the faculty and students engaged in alternative delivery methods.
4. Provides leadership to ensure that students and graduates achieve the student learning outcomes, program outcomes, and role-specific graduate competencies. • Provides leadership in developing policies for students, ensuring they are congruent with the College, publicly accessible, and non-discriminatory.
• Ensures the appropriate application of student policies and the correct implementation of related procedures by program directors, faculty, and staff.
• Ensures the availability of adequate resources to provide student services commensurate with their needs, including those receiving instruction using alternative delivery methods.
• Provides leadership to ensure the implementation of policies and procedures that allow program complaints and grievances to receive due process and include evidence of resolution.
5. Ensures that technology orientation is provided and technological support is available to students.
6. Provides leadership to ensure that the systematic evaluation plan is implemented.
7. Provides leadership to ensure that aggregated and trended evaluation findings are used to inform decision-making for the maintenance and improvement of the student learning outcomes and program outcomes; shares these findings with communities of interest.
8. Responsible for the management of faculty to include: • Provides leadership to ensure that the number of full-time faculty is sufficient to ensure that the student learning outcomes and program outcomes are achieved within budgetary guidelines.
• Ensures the availability of resources required for faculty (full and part-time) to maintain expertise in their areas of responsibility.
• Provides leadership to the program director(s) to ensure that faculty maintains expertise in their areas of responsibility and performance reflects scholarship and evidence-based teaching and clinical practices.
• Ensures that staff and non-nurse faculty's number, utilization, and credentials are sufficient to achieve the program goals and outcomes.
• Ensures the availability of adequate resources to orient and mentor faculty (full and part-time) in their areas of responsibility.
• Ensures the timely and systematic assessment of faculty (full- and part-time) performance; offers guidance to program director(s) when faculty performance requires improvement
• Collaborates with online leadership to ensure the availability of adequate resources for faculty (full- and part-time) to engage in ongoing development and receive support for instructional and distance technologies.
9. Participates in community outreach activities to include: • Engage with healthcare community members to gain insight into emerging nursing education and workforce needs.
• Engages with community and nursing leaders to build collaborative relationships that help expand Galen’s nursing programs.
10. The candidate may teach part-time (6 – 9 semester credits) undergraduate courses, which may include evening, weekend, and/or online courses. The candidate should have teaching experience at the college level.
11. Other duties as assigned.

Required education and experience
• Earned doctoral degree or another terminal degree in a discipline appropriate to the School of Nursing.
• Five (5) years of senior-level experience in higher education or nursing programs.
• Must possess a distinguished record of excellence in teaching and nursing.
• Clinical Practice in Nursing is a must.
• Demonstrated success in the development of community relationships.
• Experience in planning and budgeting.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Previous work with students from diverse populations and cross-functional teams.
• Experience utilizing database software, technology, and various learning management systems is essential.
Preferred education and experience
• Previous fundraising, friend-raising, and grant-writing experience preferred.
• Demonstrated experience in growing programs and increasing student enrollment are desired.
• Combination of higher education administration experience (with increasing levels of responsibility, at the level of the department chair or higher) and faculty experience (commensurate with tenure and promotion to associate professor or professor in any discipline).
• Previous publication and research, and track record of successful experience and accomplishments.
• Experience with academic curriculum design, evaluation, and program effectiveness.
