Summary/objective
The Division of Academic Affairs at Southern University at New Orleans, a public, historically black university, is committed to empowering and promoting the upward mobility of diverse populations of traditional and nontraditional students through quality academic programs, teaching, research, and service to achieve excellence in higher education using various teaching and learning modalities. As such, faculty of the program are expected to be committed to the standards of teaching excellence. This requirement will include the ability teach undergraduate courses which may include evening, weekend and/or hybrid courses; advise students; engage in teaching practices with an acute focus on documenting student learning; serve on faculty committees; attend departmental, faculty and other meetings, attend College convocations.
Our adjunct instructors serve to augment the regular faculty. Adjuncts help prepare undergraduate students to successfully complete the BSN curriculum and pass the National Council State Boards of Nursing Examination (NCLEX-RN) by planning, coordinating, and implementing clinical instruction in the Skills Lab, Simulation Center, and affiliated clinical organizations. The adjunct serves as an extension of the faculty and supports student learning through active learning
strategies (i.e., Socratic questioning to connect theory principles with clinical judgment).
Essential functions

1. Foster a culture of inclusive excellence through authentic relationships with students as an educator and mentor.
2. Teach assigned courses in accordance with catalog course descriptions and academic specifications.
3. Furnish each student and the chair's office with a course syllabus, which follows the prescribed format, including evaluation procedures, withdrawal procedures, class attendance, and other policies consistent with university procedures.
4. Keep accurate and up-to-date records on all students.
5. Submit grade reports on or before deadlines according to college procedures.
6. Monitor and assess student-learning outcomes and provide timely and frequent feedback to students on academic performance.
7. Collaborate with nursing faculty to deliver high-quality instruction.
8. Deliver content in online, in-person and/or hybrid formats.
9. May be assigned to supervise students at clinicals.
10. May be assigned to 2-3 sessions of on campus teaching in lab and simulation.
11. Other duties as assigned.
Clinical Site Responsibilities
• Be familiar and comply with agency policies and procedures.
• Complete all required agency training including, but not limited to electronic health records, HIPAA, medication administration and attend an orientation to the Clinical Instructor role for the unit(s) prior to taking students.
• Orient staff nurses to the level of the student and the specific learning outcomes for their clinical experience.
• Encourage nurses to communicate immediately with faculty regarding any student performance questions or concerns.
• Communicate with unit nurse manager on a regular basis, including an end-of-the-rotation communication.
School of Nursing Responsibilities
• Meet with lead course faculty at the beginning of each semester to orient to the course and review student learning outcomes, course syllabus, and learning resources. Confirm student assignments and congruence with theory content. Review course grading policies and Nursing Faculty and Student Handbook. Provide feedback about adequacy of site in allowing students to meet course outcomes to the lead course faculty. Meet with the lead course instructor to review student evaluations of the clinical instructor to grow in teaching effectiveness. Complete simulation orientation and simulation debrief training with the Simulation Lab Coordinator.
• Participate in ongoing communication with lead course faculty and discuss instructional issues and individual student learning needs and progress. Serve as a professional role model and representative of SUNO SON. Perform all reasonable assigned tasks as designated by the lead course faculty to provide students with the opportunity to meet course outcomes and program goals. Demonstrate behaviors and attitudes that are supportive of the School of Nursing students and mission, philosophy, program goals, policies, and professional/Christian values. Promote cooperation and communication among the clinical site staff, students, faculty, and other team members.
Student Instruction Responsibilities
• Direct, instruct, and guide students in the clinical setting. Assign students weekly to selected patients based on student’s learning needs and patient assessment. Assist students in collecting pertinent objective and subjective data regarding patient health status. Engage students in comprehensive, individualized instruction in the observation, assessment, decision-making, and health teaching of patients, including the maintenance of patient health or prevention of illness or disease. Facilitate development of student’s critical thinking, technical, and professional communication skills while maintaining patient and student safety and patient confidentiality. Assist students in using nursing process when providing care.
• Supervise the administration of medications. Delegate selected nursing functions to students in accordance with their level of nursing education and demonstrated competency. Provide students with written instructions for what to do in case of injury or illness in the clinical setting. Participate in course delivery, Skills Lab, and simulation as needed. Relay to students that they are guests in the clinical setting.
• Direct students to be responsible and accountable for their behaviors in the clinical setting. Communicate with students and lead course faculty
regarding student progress. Collaborate with the lead course faculty to refer students to college services as necessary. Grade written assignments, maintain accurate records, and return graded work to students in a timely manner prior to their next clinical. Hold student pre- and post-clinical conferences. Complete the weekly clinical evaluations as well as a mid-term and final clinical evaluation for each student. Hold any instructor conversations regarding student performance in private and maintain confidentiality and adhere to FERPA privacy policies.

Demonstration of competent nursing practice:
• Be accountable to follow the accepted standards, laws, and rules regulating the practice of nursing, and function within the scope of nursing practice.
• Be responsible and accountable for practice based on, and limited to, the scope of instructor’s education, demonstrated competence, and nursing experience.
• Obtain instruction, supervision, and consultation as necessary before implementing new or unfamiliar techniques or practices.
• Be responsible for maintaining current knowledge in broad and/or specialized areas of nursing.
• Maintain knowledge in current, best evidence influencing clinical nursing practice in area of specialty. Conduct nursing practice without discrimination.
• Respect patient right to privacy by protecting confidential information.
Required education and experience
• Bachelors’ degree in Nursing for clinical and lab instruction opportunities.
• Licensed and unencumbered registered nurse in the state of Louisiana.
• Be a competent practitioner of nursing with a Bachelor’s in Nursing, and/or Master of Science in Nursing degree or be making satisfactory progress towards it. Be able to evidence a minimum of two (2) years clinical nursing experience.
• Onboard to electronic learning teaching resources and e-books in Elsevier. Onboard to the CANVAS Learning Management System utilized by the department.
• Criminal history and background check clearance, evidence of current American Heart Association CPR training, and a current unencumbered Louisiana RN license.
• Provide evidence of yearly tuberculin skin tests, COVID-19, influenza, and other required immunizations as per nursing program policy.
• Possess thorough knowledge of patient medications, treatments, and diagnoses, and be able to relate these aspects of patient care to problem solving/critical thinking skill development in the student.
• Be organized, able to deal appropriately with delicate student situations, and able to effectively communicate and negotiate resolutions with faculty, students, and facility staff regarding problems in the clinical setting(s).
Preferred education and experience
• Academic preparation and teaching experience in nursing education.
• Teaching experience in online and/or in-person formats.
• Advanced computer skills including course management systems.
• Experience in electronic health records and online meeting systems.
