University College Student Success Coach

 

 

Summary/Objective

 
The primary responsibility of the University College Student Success Coach is to help students achieve their educational goals by working closely with them to select courses, identify strengths, choose a major, and act as a resource until the student graduates. University College Student Success Coach will advise students 0 - 60 credit hours and ensure students are on track to persist and graduate within four years. University College Student Success Coach will be housed in their individual College or school and report directly to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management and Student success unless a Director for Academic Advising is hired.
 

Essential Functions

1. Advise all first-time freshmen, continuing, and transfer students in University College with 0-60 earned credit hours regarding academic matters such as course selection and registration, course sequencing, and academic plan development according to assigned college.
2. Support the holistic development of students through assisting them in planning a program consistent with their abilities and interest.
3. Meet with students and perspective students to provide accurate, current curricula information on undergraduate programs.
4. Monitor the progress of students in the assigned college to improve graduation and retention rates by meeting with them 3-4 times per semester to discuss progress, needs, degree requirements, and other performance indicators and track all students and maintain data for reporting purposes.
5. Identify current and potential needs or problem areas (e.g., study skills, tutoring) and refer students to appropriate campus resources for assistance.
6. Create action plans and interventions, review student data, as well as executing short- and longterm goals for students.
7. Interpret and explain college and university policies and procedures; participates in preparation of orientation and presents academic information to new students and parents during orientation.
8. Develop and maintain healthy relationships with the Dean and faculty members of assigned college/school.
9. Communicate with the department chair of assigned college twice a semester (during orientation and before preregistration for following semester) regarding any updates to the curricula or department.
10. Check various forms for accuracy such as course withdrawal, major changes, academic appeals, curriculum changes; assists students in their completion.
11. Responsible for facilitating Keys to Success Workshops covering a range of topics (time management, procrastination, note taking strategies…etc.) to aid in student success.
12. Aid the other advisors in day-to-day operational duties and prepare various reports as requested to the Associate Vice Chancellor, Enrollment Management and Student Success/Director, University College
13. Keep accurate and detailed records of student files using Navigate, and Microsoft Excel.
14. Evening hours may be required, and additional weekend work may be required.
15. Perform all other duties as assigned.
 

Competencies

• Knowledge of higher education principles, practices and procedures required.
• Knowledge of the tenets of diversity, equity, and inclusion work and social justice education and the ability to appropriately and effectively understand and adapt to cultural differences within a group environment.
• Highly developed skills and experience with planning, coordinating, and facilitating projects/programs.
• Ability to collaborate with academic departments and University partners required.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing required.
• Ability to work effectively with professional, classified, and student personnel required.
• Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of students required. • Familiarity with FERPA regulations and matters of confidentiality.
• Familiarity with the curricular approach to Student Affairs is a plus. Education and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in education, business, counseling or a related field is required.
• Demonstrated understanding and ability to use information technology and information systems to deliver, monitor, and evaluate programs and services for students.
• Experience in fiscal management of comprehensive student affairs budgets and management of student affairs facilities.
• Strong interpersonal communication skills to collaborate effectively with all SUNO constituents including Board of Supervisors, donors, alumni, faculty, staff, students and administrative colleagues and others on and off campus.
• Master’s Degree preferred.
