FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between the certificate program and certification?  The certificate program is a program of study offered that includes 6 courses (SUBA 215; 310; 321; 325; 425; and a SUBA elective). The certificate program is the equivalent of a minor in Substance Abuse.  Certification is offered and administrated by the Addictive Disorders Regulatory Authority, a component of the Louisiana State Office of Addictive Disorders. Certification is a process that includes multiple requirements including education, experience and testing.  The courses taken for the certificate program at SUNO meet the education requirements for certification.

How is the Associate degree applied toward obtaining a Bachelor’s degree? All of the courses required for the Associate degree are required for the Bachelor’s degree. Students are encouraged to get both degrees.

Is there a master’s degree program in substance abuse at SUNO?  No, plans were made to add the masters program in addiction studies. However, due to Hurricane Katrina, those plans are on hold.  If you are interested in a masters program in addiction, please contact us at 504-286-5234.
