Description of Incident
On Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at approximately 12:29 a.m., Officer Sabrina Bailey (badge #212) of the Southern University at New Orleans Police Department received a call from Robert Fezeka, community assistant on duty at the Student & Faculty Housing facility, concerning a possible signal Signal 34 (aggravated battery) between roommates. Officer Bailey contacted the University of New Orleans Police Department for assistance.
Upon arrival, reporting Officers Baily and John Landry (UNO PD) met and spoke with victim Gloria Chatman. After observing severe lacerations to both eyes, EMS and NOPD were immediately notified by the UNO PD dispatcher. The NOPD crime lab was later notified to take photographs. Chatman stated that she and her roommate, Terneisha Sanders, were having problems earlier in the week; but Chatman left for the weekend, thinking everything had calmed down.
According to Chatman, when she arrived to her apartment (#306) on Monday, January 18, 2010, she noticed that all the food she bought had been eaten and trash was all over the apartment. Chatman stated that she began to gather her food and other items that could not go into the refrigerator, and put them in her room.
Upon Sanders' arrival at approximately 10:30 p.m., Sanders approached Chatman concerning the whereabouts of the forks. Chatman told her that she had given them to her (Chatman's) mother. Sanders reacted by beating Chatman and stomping her in the face. Chatman sustained severe damage to her face and eyes.
NOPD Officers Q. Booker (#1230) and C. Dykes (#1633) arrived at approximately 12:55 a.m. along with Detective Daggs (#1334), who arrived shortly thereafter. EMS was notified at 12:45 a.m. EMS unit #3161 (item #2588) arrived at approximately 1:07 a.m., and departed at approximately 1:32 a.m. to transport Chatman to University Hospital for treatment. All officers departed the scene at approximately 1:56 a.m.
