Institute of Performing Arts

The Center for African and African American Studies’ Institute of Performing Arts provides a cultural and educational foundation for the student population and the general public as well. Classes in Theatre Arts are offered through the Center, and seminars and workshops in dance, music and acting are all available through the Institute. The Institute embodies the creative aspects of people within, and of the African Diaspora, with various showcase presentations including the Charles Frye Literary Theater Symposium and the African/African American Women’s Arts Conference. The Special Guest Series has hosted a variety of artists, writers, lecturers, etc., including Dr. Maulana Karenga, Reverend Joseph N. Tshawane (South Africa), Herbie Hancock, Ruby Dee, Ossie Davis, Terry McMillan, Amiri Baraka, Gordon Parks, Sonia Sanchez and many more.
